It is known as one of the most important religious towns in India as well as being beautiful and historical. It is located in northern Karnataka and is more specifically located within the ruins of the city Vijayanagara (former capital of the Vijayanagara Empire). The ruins are UNESCO World Heritage Protected and are listed as the Group of Monuments at Hampi. The small town houses the Virupaksha Temple which is the key centre of pilgrimage to the region being considered as the most sacred sanctuary historically. It is still extremely popular to visit to seek peace and worship. The temple is dedicated to Shiva (known as Virupaksha in Hampi) who is one of the most iconic Gods in Hinduism.
