Borneo is undoubtedly one of the most notorious places for spotting the vibrant and gorgeous orangutans! There really is something special about seeing these beautiful and fascinating animals in their natural habitat, and if you are making a trip to South-East Asia and you’re a nature lover, Borneo is definitely worth a stop-off! In addition to the wild population, orangutans are also found in rehabilitation centres and sanctuaries where researchers and zoologists work on helping the orangutans to reproduce and be prepared for release back into the wild. As brilliant and educational as the centres are, we always recommend seeing the orangutans in their natural habitat in one of the national parks – sightings may be less guaranteed and you may not get as up-close-and-personal as you would in a sanctuary, but sinking into your impressive jungle surroundings watching these magnificent creatures is something too special to miss! Just to mention a few hotspots in the surrounding areas, Batang Ai National Park and Gunung Leuser National Park both offer great facilities to experience the animals first hand. Batang Ai is a community-led conservation that consists of stunning national parkland which homes a huge variety of fantastical and fascinating wildlife – including orangutans! The national park borders with Indonesia and you can volunteer and participate in the rehab centres based on-site which teach you conservation the Iban tribe way! Gunung Leuser hosts vast shelters as well as some of Asia’s most endangered species as well as stunning mountain peaks that soar (what seems to be beyond the clouds!) to 3,400m towering above the lush rainforest habitat simply add the ‘wow’ factor to this breathtaking place! Although you are never guaranteed to spot the orangutans in the wild, you do have a chance of seeing other exceptional animals as well as embracing your beautiful surroundings.
