Dubai’s Palm Islands are two artificial islands situated on the coast of Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Consisting of the Palm Jumeriah and the Palm Jebel Ali, both islands when fully complete will take the form of a palm tree, topped by a crescent. The islands will host residential, leisure and entertainment centres and will add 520 kilometres of non-public beaches to Dubai.
The Palm Jumeirah’s construction began in 2001, with the Palm Jebel Ali beginning shortly after. The Palm Jumeirah consists of a tree trunk, a crown with 16 fronds, and a surrounding crescent island that forms an 11 kilometer-long breakwater. The island itself is five kilometers by five kilometers, adding 78 kilometers to the Dubai coastline.
In the first nine months of the year, Dubai’s tourist numbers grew by almost 10 per cent, filling up the emirate’s hotel rooms. Dubai recorded 7.9 million visitors through September with occupancy levels at hotels and hotel apartments at 78.6 per cent and 81 per cent respectively. There are more than 82,000 rooms across hotels and hotel apartments in the emirate.
Residents began moving into Palm Jumeirah properties at the end of 2006, five years after land reclamation began.
A Monorail opened in 2009, but is not connected to other public transport.
