If you want to get up close and personal with a Geisha, your best bet is in Japan’s former capital, Kyoto. In Kyoto, there are four Geisha districts. The largest and most famous is Gion, which is split into two – Gion Kobu and Gion Higashi, then there is Miyagawacho, Kamishichiken and Pontocho. Within these districts you can witness the mesmerising Geisha shows from late March, throughout April and May and during the first ten days in November. If you are prepared to pay a substantial fee, you may be lucky enough to witness a more personal performance, perhaps in a high-end restaurant with scheduled performances. The Geisha network is fairly exclusive, and a sighting is most definitely considered to be a privilege.
